I recently had what I think was the greatest pizza of my life in New York City. This discovery happened at Don Antonio’s at 309 West 50th Street between 8th & 9th Avenues. I learned about it when I watched an episode on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” called “Keepin’ It Real”. It featured a New York restaurant that served deep fried pizza. Me being the pizza fanatic that I am, I was very intrigued by this cooking technique and knew I would be trying it soon.
So, on my next trip to the city I made a point to search for this special deep fried pizza. It is called “Montanara Starita” and it has a lighty deep-fried crust that is topped with sweet tomato sauce and imported smoked buffalo mozzarella cheese, then baked in their wood-fired oven. The flash-frying of the dough really brings out a sweetness in the crust. The combination of that flavor in the crust and their special sauce along with the smoked mozzarella is pure heaven. This pizza should be on everyone’s list for a “must try”. From now on every time I go to New York this will be on my food itinerary. Well, actually I may plan a quick trip or two to New York just so I can have this amazing pizza. It is that good!
