The Frog and Onion Pub is a restaurant very near the cruise ship terminal at King’s Wharf, Bermuda. It’s an easy walk for cruise ship passengers in search of local food along with British and American pub food.
The bar and restaurant is located in an old historic fort built from Bermudian limestone. The interior has a lot of character with its old dark wood decor. It’s furnished in the style of a mid-1700s British tavern. It really feels like you’ve gone back in time.
Our lunch of Classic Buffalo Wings, Red Onion Rings, and Fire Grilled Local Fish Sandwich was very good, but the one thing that really stood out for me was the tower of onion rings served with Bermuda Jam Storm Surge dip made with a hot pepper jam that is made locally. The jam was a sweet and spicy compliment to the crispy onion rings.
The chicken wings were very meaty, and fried crisp. They were unbreaded which is the way I really prefer them. The fish sandwich was made with very fresh local fish, probably wahoo, and was perfectly grilled and topped with more of that same Bermuda Jam.
Right across from the Frog and Onion is a craft market where you can sample and purchase all the Bermuda Jam Factory’s varieties of pepper jams. They range from “Eye of the Storm” sweet pepper and papaya jam all the way to “Hurricane Force”, a floral hot pepper jam made with Scotch Bonnets. We tried all six varieties and brought home several samplers for gifts to friends. So far, the friends haven’t received because we keep opening them and serving them as appetizers. We like them so much, we’re not giving them up!
The last time I served Bermuda Jam I used the “Gale Warning” flavor, described on the jar as “a mild sweet pepper jam with a gingery Bermuda honey finish.” I spread goat cheese on Potter’s Crackers’ Cranberry Hazelnut Crisps and topped it with the jam. Amazing. A wonderful combination of heat, sweet, and creaminess. I am sure any of their jams would be good with that combination.
I probably need to take another cruise to Bermuda to stock up on more of this great jam and go back to the Frog and Onion.
