I was recently in New York for the Memorial Day weekend. On Monday, the actual holiday, we were looking for a place to eat lunch and I was having a pizza craving. New York is a great place to have a pizza craving, since there are pizzerias everywhere. Unfortunately, since it was a holiday, many places were closed. We walked by one right next to David Letterman’s “Late Night” Theatre at 1697 Broadway that was opening in 30 minutes. It was called Angelo’s Pizza. We decided to look at two other pizzerias we had found online and both were closed. Later we would find out how lucky we were that they were both closed.
We made it back to Angelo’s at 11:30 and got a table right in the front window. We did not know what to expect since we had not heard anything about this place. I usually order a cheese pizza when trying a pizzeria out for the first time, but decided this time to order one with pepperoni. We placed our order and the pizza came out very fast. Later I leaned that the pizzas in this family-owned restaurant are cooked in a very hot coal-fired brick oven. The charred crust was the classic New York thin variety and it was topped with fresh mozzarella and fresh tomato sauce. The menu said that the owner believes in using only the freshest ingredients and it paid off. This was one of the best pizzas I had in a very long time.
I have also learned that there are more than one Angelo’s Pizza establishments in New York City: the one we found is on Broadway and is owned by Angelo’s nephew John. The other two establishments are apparently owned by other family members and are located on 2nd Avenue and 57th Street.
If you are in New York City I would definitely recommend trying Angelo’s on Broadway. I will for sure be stopping in for another pizza next time I’m there.
