After a recent trip to Maui , I wanted to create a barbecue sauce for a Kalua Pork recipe I got, and thought about flavors that would be typically Hawaiian. I found a jar of Papaya Habanero Preserves in my refrigerator that had been a gift from a friend. It seemed like the perfect combination for a barbecue sauce.
I really liked the tropical flavor along with just a little heat. So, I started with my basic barbecue sauce ingredients and then added the preserves, along with Pineapple Juice, Soy Sauce and Chinese Five Spice for a typical Hawaiian blend of citrus and Asian flavors.
Originally this sauce was created for Kalua Pork but I have tried the sauce on grilled chicken breast and baby back ribs and loved the results.
