On my first visit to Bermuda, I was introduced to the national drink, the “Dark ‘n’ Stormy”. I had never heard of it before, even in my bartending days back in Wisconsin. I was kind of intrigued by the name, so when my friend ordered it at our first cocktail stop on the island, I tasted it and found it very different and refreshing. So I decided I wanted to learn more. A bit of research online produced the story of how Gosling Brothers of Bermuda, the local rum producers, actually patented the recipe for the drink. The recipe is pretty simple — dark rum (Gosling Black Seal rum) and ginger beer with an optional garnish of lime. I like the spice in the Black Seal rum along with the flavor of ginger, but when made with authentic ginger beer, it does have an intense flavor…..so those who don’t care for even the flavor of ginger ale might not enjoy it as much. For me, it’s a great reminder of sitting at a beach bar looking at the clear blue waters on the south shore of Bermuda enjoying a refreshing cocktail.
