This grilled cheese is quite an amazing sandwich made with some really surprising ingredients. My Mom used to make her version of grilled cheese sandwiches when my brothers and I were growing up. She called them “pizza sandwiches.” Looking back, I’ve wondered if maybe it wasn’t just her way of satisfying our craving with a quick alternative to pizza. We grew up having pizza often and we loved it. Anyway, it has remained my favorite way to serve grilled cheese.
There is no fancy stuff here; just a simple combination of melted American cheese, tomato ketchup and oregano. I have surprised some friends with this sandwich and when I told them what the ingredients where, they were blown away. Somehow, those three basic flavors, along with the crispy fried bread, makes for an amazing sandwich. It’s quick and easy to make. Kids will love it…and I bet the grownups in your family will too.
