After a recent trip to Maui , I wanted to create a barbecue sauce for a Kalua Pork recipe I got, and thought about flavors that would be typically Hawaiian. I found a jar of Papaya Habanero Preserves in my refrigerator that had been a gift from a friend. It seemed like the perfect combination for a barbecue sauce.
I really liked the tropical flavor along with just a little heat. So, I started with my basic barbecue sauce ingredients and then added the preserves, along with Pineapple Juice, Soy Sauce and Chinese Five Spice for a typical Hawaiian blend of citrus and Asian flavors.
Originally this sauce was created for Kalua Pork but I have tried the sauce on grilled chicken breast and baby back ribs and loved the results.
Hawaiian BBQ Sauce
Ingredients
- 2 Cups Ketchup
- 1/2 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1/2 Cup Pineapple Juice
- 1/4 Cup Brown Sugar
- 1/4 Cup Papaya Habanero Preserves
- 2 Tablespoons Soy Sauce
- 1 Tablespoon Unsalted Butter
- 2 Teaspoons Liquid Smoke
- 1 Teaspoon Lemon Juice
- 1 Teaspoon Salt
- 1 Teaspoon Chinese Five Spice
- 1/2 Teaspoon Ground Cayenne Pepper
- 1/2 Teaspoon Black Pepper
Note
You could use any tropical fruit preserves in this recipe, you may need to adjust the cayenne pepper to get the right level of heat desired.
