Tzatziki sauce with pita bread or pita chips is great as an appetizer or, as I remember it, a perfect sauce for gyros. I can remember going to the Greek Fest at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Milwaukee and eating their delicious gyro sandwiches. The shaved roasted lamb & beef wrapped in pita bread with this sauce is incredible.
Tzatziki is usually a combination of Greek yogurt, cucumber, garlic, lemon juice and either fresh dill, parsley or mint. I recently did a taste test with all three fresh herbs and discovered the version with mint is my favorite. The cool, sweet flavor of the mint contrasted with the tangy yogurt and the sharp bite of the garlic.
This Tzatziki sauce is also perfect on the lamb burger recipe I have created. It reminds me of a gyro sandwich with the combination of the lamb and beef. It’s the best burger I have had in a long time. However you choose to serve this sauce, I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I do.
